What is a Life Cycle Assessment?

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is the measurement of the environmental impact of a product, service or process over its entire life cycle. The LCA methodology is based on the requirements of the ISO standards 14040 and 14044. These standards guarantee a uniform approach and the necessary transparency for assessing the resulting environmental impacts. It looks at a wide range of environmental issues including climate change, water use, ozone layer depletion, land use, toxicity, etc. LCA provides organizations with a comprehensive understanding of their environmental impact and allows them to make informed decisions about how they can improve their environmental performance e.g. LCA ensures that a company doesn’t make an improvement in one area at the expense of another.
